Let’s get right to the point: every time you pour alcohol down your throat, snort cocaine, shoot heroin, or smoke crack or meth, you’re poisoning your body. This probably isn’t news to you, but it’s something most addicts CHOOSE to ignore in pursuit of their next fix.
Alcohol is one of the worst things you can put into your body. It wreaks havoc on your entire system. There’s not a single thing in alcohol that your body needs or wants. Cocaine and heroin, as well as other street drugs, serve no purpose other than to temporarily change how you feel. Otherwise, they’re pointless.
But with addicts, sometimes having no point is the point. When we’re drinking or using, we’re seeking relief and oblivion, not health and improvement. We want to numb ourselves to the point where we don’t care what the point is, and that’s the whole point.
Alcohol and drug abuse impacts every part of your body, and not in a good way. They can, and do, lead to abnormal heart rate; destruction of internal organs (especially the liver and kidneys); diminished brain function; decaying bones; rotting teeth; hair loss and dry skin; and damaged lungs. These are just a few of the physical manifestations associated with long term substance abuse. Long term addiction has also been proven to cause depression, sleep loss and anxiety as well as dementia and certain forms of cancer.
Even though most of us know how destructive substance abuse is for the human body, we consume them anyway, over and over, sometimes until we lose everything we love. The most unfortunate among us often lose our lives.
If apples were proven to be poisonous to your bodies, would you stay up all night eating one apple after another? If almonds could kill you, would you chop them into dust and snort them or shoot them into your veins? The fact is you wouldn’t. But apples and almonds don’t make you feel high so why bother, right?
But we know without a doubt that every time we drink, snort, inhale or shoot our substance of choice, we’re slowly poisoning ourselves drop by drop, grain by grain.
And it’s not just the long term effects that should be a glaring warning. Even the short term effects are brutal on your body. Think about how bad the hangovers are or how often you threw up, passed out, crashed your car, or ended up in the hospital. All of these occurrences are the direct and immediate result of putting poison into your body in order to briefly alter how you think and feel.
The definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over but expecting a different result. It’s the same thing with the poison we put into our bodies as addicts. Day in and day out, we consume the poison but then wonder why we always feel like shit and can’t get anything done. Or why we keep landing in the hospital. Or why our friends and family start avoiding us. Or why our friends keep dying from their addictions.
Our insanity becomes a way of life and will kill us unless we’re willing to take the proper steps to reverse the damage.
